I don't want to live a thousand years. If I just live through today, that'll be enough. BACKGROUNDI'll try to one of these myself eventually, but for now, just read here: The actually pretty good One Piece wiki PERSONALITYBeing the son of the world's most famous (and infamous) criminal set the stage for, and deeply affected, Ace's entire life and personality. Ace became keenly aware from a young age that his father Gol D. Roger, and by extension, any hypothetical child of Roger's, was hated by the world at large. Ace, as a child, would frequently ask rough-looking strangers what they'd think of Roger potentially having a child, and every time, he received responses about how that supposed child should have to suffer and die for his father's actions. Hearing this over and over again at a young age, while searching for his identity and his place in the world, started Ace's lifelong struggle with one question: did he deserve to exist? Due to his difficult upbringing, with both the lack of anyone to really raise him and the repeated scorn of anyone he spoke to (even if those people didn’t realize they actually were speaking to Roger's son), it's no surprise that Ace resents his father, and proving himself and finding his own way in the world became important to him. While being Roger's son isolated him from others in a sense (mainly because of Ace's own feelings of feeling hated by the world), Ace was still able to make connections with others, in particular with Luffy and Sabo, who Ace (eventually) accepted as people he could trust. Once he did, Ace decided to make Luffy and Sabo his brothers (by way of sharing sake together), showing that even with his bitterness towards his father and towards the struggles his familial relationships have caused him, he still values the idea of family and has decided to create his own chosen family instead. Sabo's death soon after this is another thing that could have further embittered Ace, but instead, he chose to press forward in a positive way. Carrying on Sabo's will became another important reason for Ace to exist, and he decided to take his relationship as Luffy's older brother extremely seriously from then on. Because of Sabo's death, Ace determined that he would have to live a life without regrets from that moment forward. He asked a woman from the nearby town to teach him how to be polite, which he had absolutely no idea how to do, because he wanted to be able to thank the pirate who had saved Luffy's life (before Ace had met Luffy). These lessons changed Ace's entire way of interacting with others for the rest of his life, and even as an increasingly more notorious pirate, he became known for his polite and friendly nature. Politeness, of course, doesn't mean that Ace doesn't cause trouble. He can be reckless, acts without thinking, and is incredibly stubborn. This stubbornness led to Ace trying to kill Whitebeard at least a hundred times before accepting him as his captain, only after a frank discussion with another member of Whitebeard's crew about their family dynamic. Becoming Whitebeard's son became hugely important to Ace, and he called Whitebeard his father for the rest of his life. Once Ace does accept someone as a close friend or family, he is fiercely loyal and protective. He admits he worried about his younger brother, until seeing the strong crew Luffy has gathered, but also trusts and respects his brother's ability to live his own life and lead his own crew without Ace's involvement. However, he won't back down if someone he cares about is being threatened in any way, whether it's a physical threat or a verbal insult. This is something of a red button issue for Ace; if someone insults Whitebeard, it's something he simply cannot let go, and this flaw ends up leading to his death. Whether it's a simple verbal insult or a crew member breaking Whitebeard's one rule and killing another, Ace does not react well at all to any measure of what he perceives as disrespect towards those he sees as family, and he will do whatever he can to get "justice" for it, even if he's ordered not to do so. Ace's idea of justice, of course, wouldn't match his world's government's idea of justice. He is a pirate, has lived outside the law from the moment of his birth, and is very aware of that fact. While there is some nuance, the world of One Piece tends to have two different kinds of pirates: the kind that fit what we might understand as historical pirates, that pillage and bring violence to peaceful towns and people; and a slightly more benevolent kind, that while still clearly living outside the law by their own rules and refusing to bend to the government, and certainly occasionally benefitting selfishly from interactions with normal citizens, really only start shit with the military and other pirates. While this isn't really something that's understood in canon (most of the world seems to see all pirates as the first type of pirates, guided by plenty of governmental propaganda), it's definitely a distinction worth making, as Whitebeard was decidedly the second type of pirate. He would even claim islands as his own and fly his flag there as a deterrent to keep other pirates from causing issues with the people living there, without expecting anything in return. Ace was never really not this type, but it's likely that watching Whitebeard's style (and being groomed to eventually take over for Whitebeard, whether Ace realized that or not) shaped the way Ace interacted with the world as a pirate, even when out on his own away from the rest of his crew. Still, there's certain things that come with piracy, and Ace loves partying, eating, drinking, and having a good time with his (or any other good) crew, and he's not above stealing from others (including pirates and scrappers who clearly don't have much) either. When it comes to fighting, Ace is extremely confident in his abilities. Even before eating a Devil's Fruit and gaining his fire powers, Ace trained his physical fighting skills constantly, and was able to take down very large and ferocious animals at a young age. By luck, he happened across one of the most powerful Devil's Fruits, and this only added to Ace's strength. As a result, he's very sure of himself, and unfortunately, he doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to sizing up his opponents properly. (His impulsive nature doesn’t help this either.) Instead of being the kind of person who hangs back, gets an idea of an enemy's abilities, and extrapolates what their enemy can do and the best way to engage, Ace figures he'll be able to just dive right in and fight his way out from there. He's not a strategist in the slightest. This isn't to say he can't make plans outside of combat, although for one reason or another, these also usually go awry. As a One Piece character, Ace has a couple of fun, yet ridiculous character quirks. His most prominent is a habit of falling asleep very suddenly and at bizarre times, like right into a plate of food, during a conversation, or in the midst of a fight. Ace doesn’t seem particularly bothered by this happening to him. He likes to eat, and while he's polite in speech and generally in mannerisms, sometimes his lack of social upbringing still shines through, such as when he uses a stranger's skirt to wipe his face. He genuinely doesn’t seem to realize doing something like this is ridiculous. ABILITIESAt age 17, shortly after leaving his home island to set out as a pirate, Ace was shipwrecked on an island where he discovered the Flame-Flame Fruit. Ace had never planned on eating a Devil's Fruit, finding its drawbacks too difficult to deal with as a pirate, but when it was between that and starving to death, the fruit won out. Ace shared the fruit with another man, but since Ace took the first bite, he gained its powers immediately on ingestion. The other guy just got to eat some nasty fruit. There are different categories of Devil's Fruit. The Flame-Flame Fruit is a Logia-type, which is generally considered the strongest type, as it gives its holder complete control over a certain element. As the name suggests, Ace's element is fire. As such, Ace has the ability to create, control, and become fire, whether transforming part or all of his body into flames at will. This helps him do a lot of cool stuff, in particular:
As mentioned, though, there are downsides to having eaten a Devil's Fruit that comes in the form of complete susceptibility to water. No matter how skilled they were before, Devil's Fruit users cannot swim, and become completely without energy and unable to move in any kind of standing or "still" water. Rain and showers don't cause this issue, but ocean water, rivers, lakes, and pools can cause this reaction. Generally, someone would have to be submerged halfway or more to cause weakness and paralysis, but any amount of water can cause the user to be unable to use their Devil's Fruit abilities. There is also a stone called Seastone that causes this same weakness if it comes into contact with a Devil's Fruit user, making handcuffs made out of Seastone a viable way of holding Ace prisoner. Ace can also use One Piece's second big shonen fight power system: Haki. Haki is making use of one's spiritual energy which is a real thing that every person has. While anyone in One Piece's world can awaken their Haki, most people go their whole lives without noticing or making any use of it. There are two types of Haki that anyone can learn, and a third type that only certain people can awaken. The first type is "Observation Haki", which gives the user a sort of "sixth sense" - the user can feel the spiritual presence of others, as well as their strengths, emotions, and intentions. This can translate into being able to dodge attacks, as being able to read someone’s intentions can tell you where a blow or projectile will land. The second type is "Armament Haki", which is fairly common in a part of the world Ace has spent plenty of time in called "the New World". Armament Haki can be used both defensively and offensively. Defensively, Armament Haki can used to turn the user's spiritual energy into a sort of invisible armor, as well as provide greater physical endurance. Offensively, Armament Haki is extremely useful in that it can be used to hit an opponent regardless of their Devil's Fruit abilities. Anyone making use of Armament Haki would be able to strike Ace, even if he transformed his body into fire. This means that likely anyone who uses any kind of ability that makes use of, or specifically strikes, the spirit/spiritual energy would be able to also cause damage to Ace, even if it isn't specifically "One Piece Armament Haki". The third type of Haki has a million translations for some reason but I'm going to call it Commander's Haki, which is the rare one that someone must be born with the ability to awaken. (They do still have to train and cultivate the ability, though.) This Haki allows the user to exert their will over others, which sounds super scary, but typically only means the user will cause an opponent to feel intense fear or intimidation, leading them to run away, pass out, or lose their will to fight, although more powerful applications are not out of the question in general. Ace has only been shown using this ability one time, at ten years old, when he was able to cause a group of adult pirates to lose consciousness in an outburst of rage. Ten years later, Ace is able to name and recognize this technique when it's used by Luffy, so it's clear he's learned more about it, but unfortunately we don't know if Ace had any further training in this type of Haki, or if he's able to use it on command. EXTRANothing here yet, not sure what I might need/use this section for! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
